Dr Tapas Sen, BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD, FRCS, FRSM, FHEA, International Going Global Awardee 2025 for the contribution of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG06: Clean water & Sanitation), Member of the Intergovernmental Policy Panel (OEWG-3) formed by RSC, working for the United Nations.

  • Dr Sen is a world-leading scientist with more than 30 years of research experience from laboratory scale development to a commercial product on magnetic nanoparticles-based technology. He completed his PhD in Materials Chemistry in October 1997 from the National Chemical Laboratory, India, as one of the premier research institutions and worked in top academic institutions worldwide such as Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel (1997-1999), University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology (2000-2003), Greenwich University (2003-2005), Kent University (2005-2008) and University of Central Lancashire (Current name: University of Lancashire, 2008-2026). He is one of the pioneering researchers who developed magnetic nanomaterials with core-shell structure and magnetic porous nanocomposites for the application in MRI contrasting, bio-sensing, cancer Theranostics, pharmaceutical products via chiral catalysis, and separation & identification of toxic chemicals and microbials from water.  He received several international research grants via competitive bidding processes and published more than 100 high-quality peer-reviewed scientific reports (more than 80 high-quality original research articles, several review articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings) with more than 7000 citations and delivered more than 50 international talks as plenary, keynotes, and invited categories.  He serves on the editorial board of several peer-reviewed journals, has commissioned special issues as a guest editor, and acted as a convenor of 2 international conferences, 4 international workshops in the UK, India, and China, along with a chemical policy workshop involving the public health directorate, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the United Nations. Most notably, he was selected as a panel member to represent his capacity building project at the Burlington Consensus 3 - A United Nations Science-Policy Panel for Chemicals, Waste and Pollution Prevention - Scientists at the Heart of Global Policymaking at London in September 2025.

  • He obtained a management degree PRINCE II (Foundation Degree in Project Management accredited by globally recognised APM group Ltd.), a professional qualification for project management in  2011, and has developed the magnetic particles-based commercial product (QickBlue DNA extraction kits: QB-Ex-10, QB-Ex-50, QB-Ex-250) in collaboration with Q-bioanalytic GmbH, Germany.

  • He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), UK; The Royal Society of Medicine (FRSM), UK; and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), UK. He is a member of the Intergovernmental Policy Panel of the Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG-3) for the United Nations for environmental sustainability, a Global committee formed by the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK.

  • He was raised in an underprivileged family in a small town in India, the only family member who gained an education beyond secondary school, studied chemistry, and worked in the interface of chemistry, physics, and biology.

  • ·       Distinguished Scientist Award (2026) awarded by Scientific Laurels, A global platform certified by ISO9001

    ·       British Council Going Global award (2025) for the best project out of 105 nominations globally, recognising the impact of magnetic nanoparticles in water decontamination worldwide

    • Nav Rattan Award (2023) recognising nine distinguished individuals of Indian origin working abroad.

    • UK India Education and Research Initiative Thematic Partnership Award (2017).

    • Hind Rattan Award (Indian Jewel) from the NRI Welfare Society of India, Bangkok (2018).

    • Livesey Award Sabbatical Fellowship (2011–2012).

    • Feinberg Visiting Fellowship at the Weizmann Institute of Science (1997–1999).

    • University Grants Commission Fellowship after qualifying the UGC National Eligibility Test (1992–1997).

    • National scholarship during M.Sc. studies for securing 3rd position in the university.

  • He is a keen educator who loves to work at the grassroots level with secondary school children to enlighten their scientific minds and extend his outreach to the general public for science exhibitions.  He has been actively collaborating with the Lancashire Science Festival (News – Nano-biomaterials Research Group (senlabs.org)), National TeenTech Festival, and closely working with the Royal Institution Young Scientist Centre at the University of Lancashire, UK.
